The role of the Commissioner is to set the strategic priorities for policing in Surrey in her Police and Crime Plan and to hold the Chief Constable to account for delivering policing in line with that Plan. PCCs must also act as the voice of residents, ensuring their crime and policing concerns are reflected in local policing.
It is though important to remember that PCCs themselves have no operational policing powers and they are forbidden from intervening in police cases or investigations. They also have no power to command officers, make decisions on tactics or deployment, or to re-open or speed up investigations. These powers are reserved for the Chief Constable. As a separate entity to Surrey Police, we also have no access to police systems or case information. This means that not all enquiries are something we will be able to help with. Where this is the case, we will signpost you to the most appropriate police department or organisation to assist you.
What we can help with:
- Consider applications for funding of services to prevent crime and support victims
- Handle complaints about the personal conduct of the Chief Constable, the PCC and our office or our staff
- Review the handling of complaints by PSD finalised under the PRA 2002
- Put residents in touch with their local policing teams to discuss matters of community concern regarding crime and policing
